Paula Deanna, founder and digital experience strategist at Throughline Studio

Hi, I'm Paula

I'm the founder of Throughline Studio, and the person who will actually work on your project.
No account managers. No handoffs to a junior. When you work with Throughline Studio, you work with me directly, from the first conversation to the day your site goes live.
Throughline Studio is a diagnostic and clarity practice. We work with businesses that want to get their digital foundations right, whether that means rebuilding something that's become unclear, or building something new with the right structure from the start.
I'm a digital experience strategist with a background in marketing, commerce, design and full-stack web development. I bring all of that to every project because each discipline changes how I see the problem, what I question, and what I build to solve it.

More than someone who knows how to build a website.

A web project can easily start with the brief as given. I start one step earlier, by asking whether the brief is describing the real problem.
I bring marketing discipline, commerce fundamentals, design as a philosophy and method, consumer behaviour, technical capability, brand strategy, content design, and an understanding of how AI and search are changing the visibility landscape.
That combination matters because websites don't exist in isolation. They have to make sense to customers, support the business behind them, communicate clearly, work technically, and remain useful as the business changes.
My role is to pull those things together. I use evidence to resolve what can be resolved, then apply design judgement where evidence alone is not enough.
My background is in-house rather than agency-side, so I've worked inside organisations living with the decisions after launch. I've seen where clarity breaks down, where internal logic takes over, and what makes a digital experience genuinely easier to use and manage.

You might be in the right place if...

Your website started simply and the business has outgrown it. The content has accumulated, the structure no longer reflects what you actually do, and making changes now creates more questions than answers.
Or you're earlier than that. You're building something new, you care about how it's represented, and you'd rather get the structure right now than fix it later.
You may already know you need a better website. You may only know that the current one no longer feels clear, credible or useful enough.
Either way, Throughline Studio is a good fit when you want someone who can look beyond the surface, work out what the real problem is, and lead the digital thinking as well as the build.

What clients say:

Paula brought clarity to complex material quickly. She helped translate detailed governance information into clear, well-structured communication that worked for both our Board and the broader community. The result was something practical and reusable that will continue to support our organisation's governance and training activities into the future.

Complex Governance Communication & Information Design
Paula is one of the most intuitive, strategic, and customer-focused UX designers I've come across. She grasped the complexities of the business and translated them into a seamless, scalable framework, addressing current pain points while laying the foundation for future growth.

Straight to it. No performance.

Every project gets my full attention. That's a constraint I've chosen deliberately.
I don't start with a template. I start with your business: how it works, who it serves, where the clarity breaks down, and what needs to change.
I ask the uncomfortable questions early. I push back when something doesn't hold up. And I work at a pace that lets me do each project properly, which means I take on a small number at any one time.
If there's a wait, I'll tell you upfront. If we're not the right fit, I'll tell you that too, and point you toward someone who might be.

A different starting point.

Common digital approach
Throughline Studio approach

Design applied to the surface
Structure resolved before design begins
Built around internal logic
Built around how customers think
Template adapted for the client
Design system built for the client specifically
Launched into an ongoing retainer
Handed over cleanly, with ongoing support available when it's useful
Performance reported by the builder
Performance is visible to you and can be measured independently
If you're not ready to look at what's underneath, this probably isn't the right fit.
If you are, this is exactly where we start.

Paid media, full rebrands and animation-heavy builds are referred to trusted specialists. What stays in-house is the diagnostic thinking, the structural build and the handover.
Yes. Throughline Studio works with businesses across Australia. Most of the work happens remotely. Discovery conversations, wireframe reviews, staging walkthroughs and handover sessions are all conducted online or by phone. Location hasn't been a constraint.
A small number, by design. Every project gets direct, undivided attention, which means deliberately limiting how many run simultaneously. If there's a wait, I'll say so upfront.
Occasionally, where the work falls within the diagnostic and clarity practice. That can include information architecture, content structure, governance communications, UX audit and wireframing. These are scoped individually. If you're not sure whether your project fits, get in touch and we'll work it out.
A genuine conversation, not a sales call. Before we talk about scope or cost, I want to understand your business, what's working, what isn't, and what you're actually trying to achieve. From there I can tell you honestly whether Throughline Studio is the right fit, what the engagement would look like, and what you'd need to bring to make it work well. Most people leave the first conversation with more clarity than they arrived with, regardless of whether we go further.
Honestly, because I wanted to do the work properly. In-house roles gave me everything: real context, real accountability, real relationships. But they also meant working within constraints that weren't always in the client's or the user's best interest. Going independent meant I could choose the projects, set the standards, and be honest with clients in a way that's harder inside an organisation. I built Throughline Studio to be small deliberately, not as a stepping stone to something larger, but because this size lets me do each project the way it should be done.

A first conversation costs nothing and commits you to nothing. If we're a good fit, we'll know quickly.
